What comes naturally to us is the tendency to forget. We find it far easier to forget than to remember, that is, until it comes to those things whereby people have offended us. How is it that such things are able to remain so fresh and vivid in our memory? It is because when we are offended we constantly revise the offence by going over it again and again in our mind's eye. Memorizing Scripture we regard as arduous work, but constantly recalling the details of someone's offense against us, that work, we consider to be both good and necessary. Paul exhorts us to use the good memory hole down which we are to cast all the offenses done against us, for this is the way of love and moreover, it is only if we do this that we will be truly effective for our King.
