Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled (Jn 14) Intro: How can He say that to us? How could they live w/o Jesus with them? What would happen to them? Jesus tells us what's going to happen, starting with the most distant, working up to the most immediate.
Exposition 1. Jesus goes to prepare a place for you w/him in his Father's home (2-3) He repeats for emphasis. Believe me, there will be a place for you in the father's house. Again, if that weren't the case, I would tell you. Again, if I am going away for this purpose, you know that it will not fail.
2. You now know the way home also (4-11) "Follow thou me. I am the way and the truth and the life. Without the way there is no going; without the truth there is no knowing; without the life there is no living. I am the way which thou must follow; the truth which thou must believe; the life for which thou must hope. I am the inviolable way; the infallible truth, the never-ending life. I am the straightest way; the sovereign truth; . life uncreated" (Thomas a Kempis' Imitation of Christ, 56.1).
3. You will do greater works & have great power in your prayers (12-14) Einstein: "If there is a God, ... he has no time for me." His God was not too large. He was far too small. See Rom 8:32.
4. The Father is giving you another Counselor (16-21) Either legal advocate & defender, or personal helper, comforter, intercessor. "Counselor" brings those 2 meanings together. See Jn 16:8; also Acts 2:38.
5. Coming of another Teacher (22-26) Jn 14:26, cf Jn 16:14. You'll know Jesus so much better as the Spirit comes to dwell in you and shows you His glory.
