In His last teaching to His disciples, recorded in Matthew 28, Jesus commands them to take his truth to the whole world using two means: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” Baptism is the sacrament of entrance to the Visible Covenant; teaching is the primary means for training and discipling those in the covenant. We baptize our children, not because we believe they are saved by outward baptism but because it is the mode of entrance into the Visible Church. Inside the church, they receive the benefits of being raised to know and understand the faith. Through this discipleship, we pray that God's Spirit will make a spiritual reality of what is signified on the outside by the washing of baptism-the granting of faith in Christ, the true washing away of their sins and new life in Christ.
