Paul tells Timothy what he should do in order to be a good servant of Christ Jesus. He compares how bodily discipline is of little profit, while godliness is profitable for the present life and the life to come. This is a necessary word in season for the modern day American culture. On the one hand, we Americans could use some bodily discipline. We live sedentary lives and we are obese. And there is some benefit to disciplining ourselves at the dinner table and in getting physical exercise. But the benefit of this does not compare with the eternal benefit of godliness. Even if you are a health nut, you will get sick at times and eventually you will die. Those who are godly, however, live forever with God, enjoying Him throughout all eternity. There is a lot of emphasis today on the body and precious little on the soul. Yet it is the soul that is far more important.
