In our text our Lord is confronted by two radically different groups that make strange bedfellows: the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Although these two groups were openly hostile towards one another, they were united in their murderous hatred of Jesus Christ. And so our Lord rebukes them for their sinful request for a sign from heaven. Later, when He was in the boat alone with His Apostles Jesus warns them to beware of the leaven, the false doctrine, of the Pharisees and Sadducees. False doctrine and heresy that either adds to or takes away from the infallible and sufficient written Word of God often creeps in among God's people unawares. But though it seems like a little thing at first, before long it has permeated the entire church and pulled them away from the gospel of Jesus Christ. If the Apostles themselves had to be warned against the subtle danger of false doctrine, how much more do you and I need to be on our guard?
