Athens was the center of education and of the arts in the ancient world. It was no longer a political power, but it wielded great influence in western culture and the thought of that day. The city was filled with more than 30,000 statues of idols. The Parthenon and Acropolis (temples to gods) dazzled the skyline. Mars hill was a courtyard where the intellectuals met. It was against this backdrop that Paul preached one of his greatest sermons.
