Sin doesn't change its character once we are saved. It is still as vile, wicked, corrupt, and consuming as when we were lost in it. Sin still seeks the ultimate--to destroy us. It needs to be cut off at the root, which is what James is teaching us in this section. When we sin, it is OUR fault. No one causes us to sin, makes us sin. We must be so careful in dealing with others about their sins, because sin can be so blinding. This is why the Lord tells us to consider first the beams in our own eyes. Lust, sin, death--this is the progression in scripture. It starts with 'small' things, the 'little foxes.' We can so easily become hard and calloused, and then deluded and trapped. There are no 'small sins.' How we need that humility and knowledge of ourselves that come from the grace of God and His Word!
