Aim: To be good stewards of our faith convictions—for the higher glory of Christ.
Doctrine: Strong personalities are an important part of the church's makeup. We see this in Christ's calling of Peter and Paul (for example), even as humility got formed in them.
Exegesis: The practical reality of strong personalities—even among Christian people: they endeavor to do great things—but with firm ideas about how to best achieve them (vv. 36-38); they sometimes cannot be completely harmonized—on every point (v. 39a); they are wondrously superintended by the church's sovereign God (vv. 39b-41).
Further application: What strong personalities in the church today may learn from the same kind of saints who have gone before us: that heartfelt conviction is absolutely necessary, but that a humble faith in the perfect Christ is even more important.
Key verses: vv. 37-38 ''Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.''
