The Bible teaches two important, but paradoxical truths about the Lord's Supper: it is both a means of grace and it can harm those who eat it.
The Lord's Supper is a means of grace. Through the Supper, believers grow into the experience of union with Christ. The Supper delights believers in Jesus' sacrificial love. It deters believers from following the lusts of the flesh. It sustains believers in the hope of resurrection life with Jesus.
But the Lord's Supper can also harm those who eat it. Unbelievers eat and drink to their condemnation (1 Cor. 11:30). God is displeased by those who would attempt to partake "of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils (1 Cor. 10:21).
These two truths should convince us that the Lord's Supper must be eaten by some, but not all people. The Catechism concludes its section on the Lord's Supper by helping us understand who should commune.
