According to the verses that I just read to you, Christians are to be a sober-minded people. We are often to think about our actual spiritual condition before God; whether we are spiritually strong and healthy, or whether we are spiritually weak and sick. I believe that it is important to examine ourselves on a fairly regular basis, because it may be true that somehow we have compromised with some sin or error that has brought us into the sad condition of being backslidden. Backsliding is the act of turning from the path of Christian duty as a result of not thinking upon Christ and what He done for us. It is our not having any zeal for the truth and our love for the brethren has grown cold. Our text is telling us that remembering what Christ has done for us should lead us on to holiness and righteous living. These verses tell us that if we call upon the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, we are to remember to conduct ourselves during the time of our sojourning here upon the earth, in fear; that is, with a godly fear, because we will be remembering that we were not redeemed with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.
