This chapter opens with a personal story of God's work in the life of an otherwise unnamed, insignificant widow - the Shunammite woman. Her testimony is one of obedience. Upon hearing the Word of God she immediately does what she is told. God blesses her obedience with provisions in a time of famine sparing her the suffering of most of the nation.
The king of Syria comes to light as Elisha travels into the northern city of Damascus. Even in this pagan land he is well known as the prophet of God. His message to the king concerned his recovery from one health issue to immediately be followed by his murder.
Moving south the account picks up with the reign of the wicked son of Jehoshaphat assuming the throne. The influence of the the idolatry and godlessness of the northern kingdom permeates the southern as he has married the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. Judgment on his wickedness unravels his reign as territories revolt. He will also receive a message from Elijah with further details of judgment to come on him and his house that will conclude in his painful death.
Conclusions from this study include: 1. Being the recipient of great blessings from the Lord does not mean there will not be hardships and trials. 2. Nothing happens without God having determined it. 3. God is never too busy to be bothered. 4. Even the godless rulers serve by divine appointment. 5. Ungodly influence has a corrupting impact.
