This week, we continue to consider what is pointed to by the Sabbath, the eternal rest with God. The rest of the promised land was always pointing to the same rest as the seventh day. The rest that can only be accomplished by the work of God and not by our works. Salvation entails stopping thinking that we can achieve rest through our works and instead trusting that God did the work, which is why we still have a Sabbath rest. One aspect of the Sabbath is to testify that there still remains a possibility of rest. When we rest from our labors, we are testifying to the community around us, that there still remains a rest for those who repent and turn to God. But it is not a call to sloth, it is a call to be diligent to make certain that we enter God's rest.
