The idea that the Bible is sharper than any two-edged sword is frequently applied, but in these verses we get the context. After the writer warns us to not be like the Israelites in the desert who refused to go into the Promised Land, we are told to be diligent to make sure that we enter His rest. The core means for that diligence is the Word of God. It is what is able to allow us to see the thoughts and intents of our heart. Our hearts can deceive us and convince us that we are right with God when we are really still refusing to obey. The word of God shines light into the dark recessives of our hearts, so we can understand have we really entered His rest or not. God already knows the account that we will give. The word of God allows us to see, if we are willing, what account we will give. The writer then continues with an exhortation. Christ was tempted in all the same ways. He understood the things that make it difficult to enter His rest, so we can cry out to Him for wisdom and strength for He knows all our needs and struggles. When we deceive ourselves and pretend like we are hiding from Him, we never are. We are always hiding from ourselves and it is always better to know what God thinks of us than to abide in deception.
