Now, the disciples have walked out of the Temple and are in wonder and awe of the physical buildings of the Temple and Temple Mount. I will have to admit that the view of Jerusalem from the surrounding mountains is mesmerizing. I was able to visit Jerusalem in 2008, and the first glimpse of Temple mount was amazing. I can’t imagine the glory of this building as the sunshine reflected off of its white limestone and the gold that radiated from this house of worship of the One True God. It would have been spectacular to look at. However, in the midst of this, Jesus has another message for these disciples. There is something more spectacular going to happen, but it is not going to look spectacular. Jesus will die on the cross bearing the wrath of God on behalf of sinners and will resurrect from the dead establishing the firm foundation of the church of the living God, the new spiritual Temple. As a result, Jesus explains the coming destruction of the Temple and then preaches the Olivet Discourse to Peter, James, John, and Andrew. This morning, the title of the message will be Watch: The Call to Endurance. Will you make it through the troubles of this life and remain faithful to Jesus or will things take you away from your first love? Will you endure to the end and be saved? We will consider the following things the disciple would have to endure 1) The Destruction of the Temple 2) The Devastation in the World 3) The Persecution of the Disciples and Proclamation of the Gospel
