What D. L. Moody said in 1885 rings true today: "I believe that...by its lukewarmness and formality, the Christian Church is making more infidels than all the books that infidels ever wrote. I do not fear infidel lectures half so much as the cold and dead formalism in the professing church at the present time. One prayer meeting like that the disciples had on the day of Pentecost would shake the whole infidel fraternity." James reminds us that it is the "fervent" prayer of a righteous man that avails much. That verse could be translated, "The prayers of the righteous, when ENERGIZED, accomplish much." As an example of what can be accomplished through the energized praying of a righteous man, James reminds us of Elijah, who pleaded with God to chasten Israel through drought, in order to bring them to repentance. If you suspect that your prayer life is not all that it could be, you may find this message to be helpful and challenging.
