While Mardi Gras has mostly become an excuse to get drunk and go wild, the religious background of it is also deeply flawed. In Catholicism, the idea of Mardi Gras (French: Fat Tuesday) is to over indulge for the last time before the fasting of the Lent season comes. The problems with this concept are numerous. A true follower of Christ would have no desire to indulge their sin to the fullest. Nor is repentance, forgiveness, and faith as mechanical as the practice would have you believe. God is sovereign and grants a truly repentant heart to His elect. And when the elect are born again, they no longer desire to walk in sin. True repentance is a matter of the heart, and cannot be conjured up by a sinner who has a will enslaved to sin.
