This message is a mix of thought first stimulated by ML Jones book on Spiritual Depression.
Peter has been taking measure of his service of Christ and his sacrifice for Christ and is asking what it will gain for him. Jesus likes his faith but cautions his calculations for they are wrongheaded.
Let me come at this another way. It is not uncommon for a person who has answered Christ's call to enter the work of vineyard to become discouraged and disheartened later in the work when things in the ministry do not go as they had dreamed or anticipated. Our enemy wishes to rob the Christian of joy. If he can't have us in his kingdom and we must be in the kingdom of Jesus Christ then his thinking is let them a least be a sad and disappointed crowd. There are any number of ways that he tries to rob the Christian of joy but one of them is right in this place where we meet in the body of Christ and serve one another in the vineyard. We start of seeming so well and end up wrong. Where does it happen? Well I think it happens when Peter's faith cross over into Peter's calculations.
