The story of Martha and Mary reminds us of the priority of hearing the Word of God in life. One thing is needful: food for the soul. Feeding on the bread of life is "the good part"—the choice portion which Mary had chosen but Martha got distracted from. Sitting at Jesus' feet is something Mary chose to do. It won't happen accidentally, because there are too many other things, many of them good, to crowd it out. It's not something you choose once and it's settled. You have to keep choosing it over and over again, day in and day out, by saying no to other things so that you can say yes to this one vital thing.
