As we begin our study in the Book of Daniel, I would have you note the many similarities between Daniel (the human author of this inspired book) and Joseph (one of the twelve sons of Jacob).
1. Both were violently taken from their homes and families at a young age. 2. Both were greatly tested by the Lord in a foreign land that had different customs, culture, language, and especially a different religion than the one true religion of Jehovah that they were taught and believed. 3. Both remained faithful in their youth to the Lord under great pressure to conform to the world/flesh. 4. Both were unjustly imprisoned for their faithfulness to the Lord. 5. Both were given by God the extraordinary gift of the interpretation of dreams and both interpreted the dreams of mighty rulers. 6. Both were exalted by these mighty rulers to positions of power to exercise government in pagan kingdoms in order to be a witness to those kings and kingdoms that it is the Lord God alone that orders the events of history—not fate, not kings, and not their false gods. 7. Both young men rose to fame, were greatly used of the Lord to bear witness to Jehovah, and died in faithfulness to the Lord, not having been moved or pressured by the royal court, pagan religion, or corrupt culture around them to compromise their trust in the God of their salvation.
The Book of Daniel clearly reveals that God is sovereign over the nations, and He knows how to humble the proud and to exalt the humble (Daniel 4:34-35).
