In Phil 3:14, Paul presses on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call. The upward call is the effectual call of the Gospel by which the Father draws His elect to Christ. The prize of the upward call is Christ Himself. He has taken hold of His people and pulls them to Himself even as we run to Him. When we finally cross the finish line, we will have fully laid hold of the One who has taken hold of us. It is the love of Christ that compels us. When our eyes have been opened to the Gospel, we find that Christ is truly irresistible.
