Why did God allow evil to enter the world? Why did He permit Adam and Eve to fall? Why did He allow them to be tempted by Satan? Why was there a forbidden tree? Why was there a Satan at all? Why did he fall into sin and take a lot of angels with him? Why did God allow that? Why didn't God start over after Adam and Eve sinned?
We can think of all kinds of questions and all kinds of supposedly possible universes in which sin doesn't exist. But though we have these questions, the Bible provides no direct answers. All we have is clues. One clue is the good that God brings out of evil, which we considered last week. If He is able to bring about so much good from so much evil, we can trust that He has a good reason for allowing it all in the first place. A second clue is the repeated emphasis in scripture on the fact that God does all things for His own glory. It is safe to conclude that God has ordained a world in which sin would emerge because it glorifies Him more than an alternate universe that we might imagine. A third clue is Romans 9:22-24. This passage, more than any other, comes the closest to answering the question, "Why did God allow evil?" But the answer satisfies few. When we consider it all, we come to the issue of faith. We either trust God with this, or we don't.
