I think there are two great dangers that local churches and even denominations face. On one hand there is the danger and destruction that comes from unjust and hypocritical judgment of others. This can soon tear apart families and local churches, especially congregations that are smaller in number. But another danger, one that maybe doesn't operate with the same speed but is of equal danger is a lax permissiveness. In some ways this is perhaps a greater danger because it fits very well into the postmodern spirit of the age that we must be tolerant and accepting. Paul wrote in 1 Cor. 13:4, Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up…” But true Christian love does not just sit around and do nothing. Rather we are called to love each in other in difficult ways by being willing to give humble correction and receive such correction from others. Gal. 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Judge yourself first so that you can help others. 1. Warning About Sinful Judgment, v. 1-2 2. Parable and Instruction in Right Judgment, v. 3-5 3. Don't Let the Gospel Message Be Unnecessarily Mocked, v. 6
