God's commandment to Abraham to command his children after him to walk to keep the way of the Lord came with a purpose: so that the Lord would bring about for Abraham what He promised him.
God's commandments to children to obey and honor their parents come with a purpose as well, a blessing that things would go well with them. In Colossians 3:20, Paul even says that the obedience of children to their parents "pleases the Lord."
Parents of young children, the single most important thing you can do for your child when they are very young is to train them to obey you. We do this as parents for the Lord's sake, for our children's sake, and for our own sake as well.
In our society, this Scriptural teaching is ground where, as one congregant put it, "even angels fear to tread." But we must not neglect our God-directed responsibilities as parents to our children simply because this teaching is anathema in our culture today.
