"Children are a heritage from the Lord" (Ps. 127:3). Children are a gift, a sign of God's kindness and his commitment to his gracious covenant. But they are also a sacred trust, an inheritance to be stewarded. Solomon goes on to say that young disciples are a creative and energetic army the church must train to engage God's world (4–5). Older saints must equip the next generation of Christian soldiers through modeling, teaching, and training.
God gives the entire Bible for the instruction of young people. But in a few places he speaks uniquely and directly to young people. In Titus 2 he isolates a few traits that young people must acquire if their lives will "accord with sound doctrine" (2:1). And, as unpopular as this is today, he speaks differently to young women and young men. Both must be self-controlled. But God has created male and female bear his image in ways unique to our given gender. So our callings are distinct but complementary.
Young people, hear and begin to do what God expects of you. This is your time to train no matter your age. Older believers—not parents only—hear your calling to promote maturity among covenant young people.
