As we begin chapter 4 of Ephesians and enter into the practical section of the epistle, I plan to begin with a biblical lesson that answers the penetrating questions: 'What exactly is our calling as human beings? What was lost in the Garden?' In order to gain the rewards that await us in this next practical section of the epistle we must first understand what was lost.
One of my favorite authors, G.K. Chesterton makes a profound point with a brief observation, 'To the question, 'What is meant by the Fall?' I could answer with complete sincerity, 'That whatever I am, I am not myself.''
If by 'I am not myself' Chesterton means that he strongly suspects that God's original intention for him prior to sin was far more grand than that which he, in a fallen state, is now experiencing, he is dead right. The fact is, much was lost in the Garden. You and I were intended by our Creator to reflect and represent something far beyond what any of us are capable of in our fallen condition. But Christ changed all that.
