If any one was more qualified to write this great exhortation, then surely it was Peter. For though no true believer is spared, or above, the dangers of which he writes in these two verses, Peter had himself personally experience this sad truth in a way like none other.
He, who once so boldly professed his unwavering faith and devotion to Christ in the company of all the disciples, would soon afterwards find himself denying that same Christ.
He, who believed himself to be "steadfast", would quickly fall by such self confidence. He, who looked into the face of Christ and made such a bold statement, would soon look into that same divine and blessed face, while denying Him.
Now, inspired by the Holy Spirit, he would exhort all true believers to "beware" that they fall not from their own steadfastness." But, "grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."
Let the true believer never possess the vain thought that he is above such temptation. For we all are prone to "fall from such steadfastness", if it were not for the infinite mercy and grace of our God.
May we be encouraged and provoked by these blessed words of Peter, to "beware and always watch and pray", for we are always in danger of falling from, our own steadfastness and self confidence is usually that which begins such a downfall. |
