Jesus desires for us to be fruit-bearing Christians, that is, to exhibit within our lives the character and behavior of Christ. To do so, we must first of all be connected to the true vine, to Jesus Christ by faith in Him. Live branches bear fruit; dead branches, no fruit. But we not only need to be plugged into Christ. We also need to be turned on. The sap of Christ needs to flow in and through us so that we not only bear fruit, but more fruit, and much fruit. This sermon explains the dynamic of mutual abiding. We abide in Christ, but Christ also abides in us. And through the means of the Word of God and Prayer, fruit is produced in us. But this sermon also explains the discipline of pruning. God the Father, the master gardener, does whatever is necessary to produce as much fruit as possible in us. He is constantly lifting us up, pruning us, and then cleansing us so that in the end we produce the peaceable fruits of righteousness in us. We produce fruit, more fruit, much fruit!
