This morning we consider again the theme of war and battle from Genesis 14, which is the first story of war recorded in Scripture. Last Sunday from Genesis 13, we noted that Abram was a man of peace. He looked out not for his own self-interests but for the interests of his nephew, Lot, who then made a very foolish choice to live near and eventually in the wicked city of Sodom. Here the focus of chapter 14 is that Abram was also a man of war. As we noted last week, he did not give Lot the first choice because he was weak. He was as this chapter shows a man who had disciplined not only himself but 318 men born in his house. Abram was an incredible leader. And yet as we will see, this story is not about the glory of battle. The praise is not given to Abram a mighty warrior but the Lord who is the ultimate warrior. The chapter ends with Abram encountering an even greater man, Melchizidek, who brought refreshment and a blessing to Abram. This chapter is another reminder that we are called to a life-long battle. It is also a reminder that we only can fight because of God's blessing. If we have any success it is only because of the blessing of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are called to battle and to know the blessing of Christ.
