Maturing Faith Luke 17:1-10 In Luke 17, Jesus is preparing to hand over the keys to a fledgling group of disciples. He's pressing them toward a mature faith. We get to listen in and learn what mature faith is all about. The lesson Jesus taught in Luke 17, Jesus urged His disciples not to get tripped up, and even more importantly, He reminds us not to trip up others. He reminds us that there are many things that could cause us to stumble. Watch out! And then He circled around to warn His followers not to be the source of the stumbling. Don't trip them up! Jesus used the word "skandalon." It's where we get the word "scandal." Basically, it has two meanings: First, it means a crooked stick that could be used to bait an animal. The second meaning is anything that could trip someone up. Both meanings apply here. As Christ-followers, we don't want to cause someone to be lured into scandal. We don't want to cause anyone to stumble either by inducing them to walk down an impure or ruinous path.Jesus ended this teaching on kingdom living with an obscure analogy about servant-hood. He expressed the need for us to realize that we aren't the star of the show. It's not about recognition, awards, or remuneration. The life we live in Christ must be grounded in humility and a willingness to serve, and then doing a little extra. In Louisiana, we call it lagniappe. It's the act of finding the needs that are mentioned and giving more, and then a little bit more. So, we must make a choice: Will we live in a state of pride and unforgiveness, or will we practice mature faith? It only takes enough faith the size of a mustard seed to pluck up a sycamine tree.
