Peter explains how much more we know than those who came before us. The prophets who came before the Messiah were desiring greatly to understand the meaning of their prophesies, but they were given to them to minister to us. Not for them to understand. Even the angels desired to understand the prophesies of the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. Do we desire to know these things that the prophets sought to understand or do we just ignore those things that we now can understand? If we care about those things as much as the prophets before Christ, then we should be sober and have our mind fixed on the things that matter. Not being concerned about the things of the world around us, but fully trusting in the grace that will be brought to us when Christ returns. If we understand why the Messiah had to suffer, if we understand the grace that we will receive when all our sins are done away with, then we will not lust after the things of this world. Instead, our lives will be focused on being holy because that is a significant part of the grace that is to be brought to us, that we will be made perfectly holy.
