After Moses met with the elders of Israel and the people, he went to tell Pharaoh that God said to let His people go feast in the wilderness. Claiming to not know who God is, Pharaoh responded with why should I obey Him. Moses and Aaron respond that if they do not go and worship, God may strike them with pestilence and the sword. It is interesting that God's words focus on blessing and Moses' words are about fear. Pharaoh then accused them of just trying to take the people from their work. Pharaoh then commanded the taskmasters and the leaders among the Israelites to make them work harder, by not bringing straw to them for the bricks, but to make them gather their own, which the taskmasters and leaders passed along to the people. This caused the Israelites to be scattered through the whole land of Egypt. God, in preparing them for their deliverance, made it harder for them. We should understand salvation continues to frequently work that same way now. Hearing about salvation, usually leads to difficult times before salvation comes before we are truly trusting in God. May God do the work of salvation among the unbelievers among us even though the process can be a great burden for them to bear.
