In worship this past Lord's Day, we heard John 5:16-47 read and taught from the pulpit. This narrative is a continuation of the previous week's reading and sermon (the healing of the man at Bethesda). We focused in on Jesus' teaching on the Sabbath as the healing of man on the Sabbath had become the reason the Pharisees were plotting to kill him. From the text we learn the purpose of the Sabbath, that Christ is over the law (because He is the lawgiver) and that he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it (and therefore we learned how to apply the Sabbath principle into our lives today).
