Christians today need to know what they believe and declare their convictions to a world dominated by secularism and awash in relativism. Paul put it simply: "For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved" (Rom. 10:10).
The first words of the Belgic Confession capture this urgent need of every age. Everyone believes and confesses something. Christianity begins with God. So, the confession starts by enlarging the first words of the Nicene Creed ("I believe in one God): "We all believe with the heart and confess with the mouth" the "being whom we call God." We must believe what God reveals it to us and, speak what we know. We don't have to prove him. But we must proclaim him.
The study of this historic confession is meant to reinforce what Scripture says we must believe and equip us in our witness for Christ.
