This sign of circumcision was received by Abraham as a seal of the righteousness of faith; God showing him that what He had purposed to do, in relation to both Abraham’s natural and spiritual descendants. All things related to God’s purpose for the nation of Israel, and God’s sending His own Son into this world, would be completely fulfilled. But God also gave it so that Abraham would better come to understand the cost of redemptive sufferings. It would cost him a certain amount of suffering to be circumcised, but it would cost Christ His precious life’s blood. Christ’s sufferings were the basis of all the blessings of his salvation and ours. Christ’s sufferings would purchase the grace necessary for Abraham to learn to trust in God, to learn His ways, and to become a mature man of faith. God will do the same for every true believer in Christ. I want to show you 1st of all then: That Circumcision was a covenant of promise that God made with Abraham that He would give him a son. 2nd –That Circumcision was a covenant of obedience which pointed forward to Christ. And 3rd – That Circumcision was an everlasting covenant that was typical of the circumcision of the heart of every believer, whether Jew or Gentile.
