When God told Moses to start describing the offerings to the Israelites, He started with the burnt offering. This offering must come before any other offering that is acceptable to God. The burnt offering is the picture of substitutionary atonement. When the offerer lays his hands upon the head of the bull, it is a picture of transferring the responsibility for sin from the sinner to the sacrifice. We know that the blood of bulls and goats does not take away sin. It is just a picture, but the picture is a serious one. Whoever does not transfer the responsibility for his sins to the true sacrifice, Jesus Christ, they themselves will be the burnt offering instead of their substitute.
