The next type of offering that God told Moses to instruct the people on was the grain offering. This is the offering that all but a handful or a piece is for the priests. They are to receive it remembering God, but it is for them to be provided for. The grain represents the Word of God for man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. They can receive it as the grain itself, mixed with oil and baked, baked and then oil poured on it, baked in pan or baked in a pan uncovered. These are pictures of how the priests of God are to receive the Word of God in different ways, where we process it ourselves or where it has been prepared in different ways for us. It is important to note two other things as well. It is a freewill offering. The Israelites had a responsibility to tithe, but this is not part of the tithe. This is what they were to receive because of the free choice of others, not by compulsion. The other is that it must be offered with salt. Salt is a picture of joy. When receiving the Word is drudgery rather than joyful, we should not expect to be blessed by it.
