Paul recognized - and wanted the Corinthians to recognize - that the whole congregation was implicated in the individual man's immorality. The church needed to expel the offender, but with the understanding that that action was but one part of addressing the arrogance that pervaded the whole body. In the end, they needed to expel the leaven of arrogance in all of its manifestations. This required that the Corinthians begin to operate with the mind of Christ, which meant reassessing their own thinking and disposition, not just toward impropriety and immorality in their ranks, but also toward the world around them. With that in mind, Paul referred the Corinthians to his previous instruction and the fact that they'd misconstrued his meaning.
