Does God have to do something before we believe Him? Are we content to stay as we are rather than be ready for what Christ might do to change us? Do we limit God to what our own minds can conceive is possible? The kind of faith that was ready and willing to believe and act on His word was surprisingly lacking when Jesus came to His own people. It may also be lacking in our own hearts. Where needy people took Jesus at His word the Father delighted to reveal His gracious activity through His Son, flooding our weakness with His power, causing the crippled in body and spirit to stand and walk by His command. Many Jews found themselves violently opposed to Jesus because He placed Himself on the same level as God, claiming to have the right and freedom to represent the Father in the way He healed on the Sabbath. Legalistic and lifeless religion will always struggle with His unsettling claims, but what joy we can know when we receive the truth of who He is and entrust all our need to Him.
