This study is a follow up study on the subject of humility that we considered last week. The advice of the elders who stood before King Solomon to Solomon's son, Rehoboam was that Rehoboam adopt the humble approach of using his authority to serve others. Had Rehoboam heeded this advice he would have gained the loyalty of his subjects and prevented irrepairable division. The same holds true in our various relationships today - whether it be husbands and wives, parents and children, church members and church elders, employers, and employees even citizens and their civil government. If we adopt the Christ-like practice of humble service much good is accomplished and much harm is avoided. In this study we consider the value of the advice of the elders to Rehoboam and we consider the fact that even though Rehoboam rejected that good advice we should nevertheless heed the advice for the good of our relationships and for the smoother functioning of authority.
