He was a robust man who lived in the desert. He stood against a culture of immorality, wickedness, and indifference. He was not concerned about the food he ate or the entertainment he received. He was a staunch man on a mission.
He was a man who had the great joy of seeing God come into this world in a human body, to be murdered in the place of His own people. This man's whole life was centred on ushering the God-man into this phase of heroic action. He reminded his disciples that this great man must become greater, and he must become less.
Yet after a short stretch we see this man in prison, discouraged; his eyes and ears filled with misery and the great kingdom of his Hero doesn't seem to have materialised.
He knew the facts. Why was it that he needed to hear them again?
