Jesus' words are difficult words. They go against our natural response. What is more natural than wanting to hit back when you have been hit? What is more natural than wanting back what has been taken from you? What is more natural than hating those who hate you, curse you, and persecute you? And so especially this morning we see that the gospel message, while far from being a call to become a doormat for the wicked, does cut against our normal but sinful human reactions. We rightfully reject any form of effeminate Christianity. Jesus shows us what true Christian strength and power look like. They are not identical to how the world defines them. True Christian strength and power come from living out the message of the gospel in following the example of our Lord and Savior. They come from living as sons of our Father in Heaven. They come from seeking to be perfect just as our Father in Heaven is perfect. We will look at verses 38-48 again in two parts: 1. Jesus condemns unlawful revenge – the power to suffer. (v. 38-42) 2. Jesus condemns unlawful hatred – the strength to love. (v. 43-48)
