Every city of man is laid out upon the designs of human religion. Human religions give people practices to achieve a self-appointed goodness and at the same time activities to appease their sense of failure in reaching that goal.
Look at the world and this is the movement you'll see constantly within it, for the world is a very religious place. At one-point people are building their towers of babel to reach the sky or the throne of God so that they may claim significance and the next moment these same people are in a spasm of numbing amusements so as to forget how really small, after all, that tower they are building looks against the vast untouched sky. God is still unmet.
WE are to live outside that city. And we are to go out to Jesus Christ and be with Him instead. The world wants us to support their efforts and strategies to salvage or save themselves. The world wants us to jump into their own dull amusements and mindless celebrations to down play or forget that they are failing. We are not to do either. We go with Christ instead. He takes us away from these religious activities which characterizes every human age. But then Christ sends us back among people to live out before them our security in Christ, our confidence in His righteousness, our identity with Him in His death for our sins and our identity with Him in His resurrection over the death as our hope of eternal life.
