We come this morning to the main request that John makes of the elect lady — that is, the local church. In other words, brothers and sisters, this is a request that John makes of us. If you are part of this church — which you are, because you're sitting here — then John is standing here, behind this pulpit, asking you one thing. You know how, when you get a call from someone who doesn't usually call, all you can do is sit and wonder "Why is this person calling me?" And until he says why, you're not easy in your mind. You're waiting and waiting for the real purpose of the call to emerge. Well, the congregation was wondering why John wrote to them. Now they know. He wanted to remind them to love one another.
It's simple. It's not complicated. It's just difficult: Love one another. This command has been clear from the beginning. It's well-known. And it's vitally important. With God's help, I will remind you of these things today.
