Over the last several months we have studied each of the twelve articles of the Apostles' Creed. We have understood the Creed as a boundary around historic orthodox Christianity. The Catechism has helped us to confess, defend, and apply the doctrine of the creed: of God's creation and providence, of Christ's divinity, his becoming human, his suffering, death, ascension, heavenly session, and future return, of the deity and personality of the Holy Spirit, of the church, of forgiveness of sins, and the blessed future state of God's children.
Lord's Day 23 begins with the not-so-elegant but critically important question: So what? What we are going to hear is that believing this theology actually changes you from a slave to a son, from God's enemy to his friend. This is the value of theology! Right doctrine is not for patting ourselves on the back or worse, for proving others wrong. Right doctrine, sincerely believed, is how we recover the saving and comforting knowledge of God that was lost in the fall.
