I think it's very important to keep in mind as you move through this section that Paul is drawing contrast between the believer and the unbeliever. This is not a contrast between two kinds of believers. What he really shows here is why the believer does not walk according to the flesh, in fact why he cannot walk according to the flesh. The things of the flesh occupy the attention of the unbeliever. This is the world in which he lives, the things which consume him. This is what he thinks about, this is what he desires. This is what he gives his life to and for. These are the things that matter to the unbeliever, his possessions, his status, his recognition, his personal importance, everything bounded by this life. The fleshly minded person has excluded God from his life, from his thoughts. But those who are according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
