Aim: To win the battles of life through our faith in Christ.
Doctrine: When sinners, rulers, ministers, and Satan brawl, the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Christ's enemies are sure to put up a fight, but they are always subdued by the triune God.
Exegesis: The nature of the spiritual boxing match: the church ''throws'' the ''first punch''—in her evangelism of the world (vv. 4-5); sinners fight back—as some of the fiercely resist Christ (vv. 6-11); the elect get saved—as they believe the preaching of the gospel (v. 12).
Further application: How we Christians are to approach life in a fallen and dangerous world: with bold confidence in Jesus—taking the fight to the devil; and with the humility of Christ—recognizing that all our strength comes from Him.
Key verses: vv. 9-10 ''Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at [Elymas] and said, 'O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord?'''
