In verse 16, Paul now uses the analogy of the human body. Believers are not given gifts to be used in isolation for self-edification, nor are they to seek growth to maturity on their own. Paul's vision included all Christians (Colossians 1:28-29). Paul himself, though far advanced in his understanding of the deeper things of Christ, strove for a knowledge of the Son of God and a degree of maturity that would come to him only after all other believers had attained it as well.
