Much controversy surrounded how one is to interpret Ezekiel 40-48 because it appears that in the future Kingdom Age that we will revert back to the Mosiac Law with the animal sacrifices and religious festivals. This has led some to conclude that we are not to take Ezekiel 40-48 literally, but rather interpret it figuratively as apocalyptic literature. But Ezekiel is commanded to record what he saw for future generations to study its details. Others have concluded that Ezekiel 40-48 has already been fulfilled historically with the building of the second temple under Zerubbabel after the Babylonian captivity. But missing from that temple was tthe return of the glory of the Lord and absolute holiness . This has led others to conclude that Ezekiel 40-48 refers not to the Kingdom Age, but to the Eternal State for the similarities between Ezekiel 40-48 and Revelation 21-22. However what will be missing in the Eternal State is a Temple, for God and Jesus Christ will be the temple in the eternal state. It is best to take Ezekiel 40-48 at face value, as literal description of what will be and deal with the questions of reverting back to Mosaic Law and animal sacrifices. But the challenge for all is for us to search the Scriptures to see if these things are so!
