Jacob is on his way to see his son. He had stopped at Beersheba to offer sacrifices. In the middle of the night, the Lord appears to him for the eighth and last time. From there, we would expect the story to race to its emotional climax and resolution: the reunion of Joseph and Jacob. Instead, we go from visions to … genealogy. It is not what we would write. But genealogies are important. They reinforce the historicity of the Bible and trace the line of the promised seed. In genealogies, God proves himself faithful and good.
We could go into detail about the meaning of each person's name, if they founded a clan, any claim to fame for the clan, and so forth. Instead, we note some highlights, including commenting on the various discrepancies in the totals. I will end by reviewing the amazing symbolism of the number 7 and the significance of 70 descendants of Jacob moving to Egypt.
