The Corinthian Church was born in an Ash heap. Corinth was a cesspool filled with the sewage of immorality. It is only fair to note that the Corinthian converts who had now been born into the family of God had first been born and raised in a city that was as vile and vicious as one could imagine. God had taken the Christians out of the Miry clay of this contaminated mess. They had truly been won for Christ and formed into a local church. They had left their idols to worship the living God. But as Baxter writes, “They could not break free in ten minutes from all that was ingrained in them, or from all the social conditions and seductions around them.” Some of the garbage remained in their thinking and all of the garbage surround their lives in Corinth. They had not effectively come out from Corinth to live clean lives. Paul is now writing them to reprimand them and to direct them into the life to which God had called them. And at the very beginning Paul lays the down the manner of approach he would take in this letter of correction. This manner of approach is just the way it still needs to be now as God would come to correct us and reprimand us.
